Charwell Proof Plus helps university students worldwide to present their work more clearly and professionally. Correct grammar is essential to the credibility of any written work, and essays, dissertations and theses all benefit from clear, concise content that is presented correctly – especially when around 10% of your marks depend on your standard of English.
Along with the spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency I will check that, for example, the headings match the Contents page, and in citations that your spellings of author names are consistent. Research papers and journal articles will also benefit from a final check by Charwell Proof Plus.
Are you an ESL (English as a Second Language) student? If your written English is easily understood by your examiner, you will be marked on the work you’ve put in, not marked down due to poor English.

About Charwell Proof Plus
Charwell Proof Plus was founded in 2002 by Sarah Smith, an English ex-PA who gained a higher diploma in Proofreading and Copy-editing from Chapterhouse, a training college in Exeter, UK. She also has completed the Fiction Editing course run by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading.
Sarah has a flair for written English and has edited academic, fiction and non-fiction books, NGO reports, government booklets, blogs, and a wide variety of student theses and dissertations, from both native English writers and from those with English as a second language, throughout the UK and Europe, the USA, the Middle East and the Far East.

Charwell Proof Plus provides an efficient and cost-effective proofreading and editing service. I will check for typos and spelling, check the grammar and punctuation, make sure the decisions you make (e.g. US or UK spellings) are consistent all the way through, and if you’d like me to, improve your sentence structure, so that your readers will immediately grasp what you are trying to say.
How It Works
To access my proofreading and editing service, please email me your document – a few pages or the whole thing – as a Word attachment. I will have a look through and, if you like, do a couple of pages and return them to you so that you can see what I can offer. I will give you an estimate of how long the document will take me and how much the work will cost.
Once we agree in writing that I should work on your document, we will have a contract. I will examine every character and space. Any errors will be changed and highlighted, with a note in the margin if necessary. I will query any anomalies, and if appropriate, also make suggestions to improve the writing.
Your work will be returned to you in two versions: the first will have the suggested changes highlighted (via Track Changes) and the second will be the final – ‘clean’ – version with all those changes accepted. You will therefore be in total control over your document, free to accept my amendments or decline any you don’t like.
Feel free to email me if you have questions or are at all unsure of why some changes have been made, and I will be happy to explain.
I charge on the length of time a job takes and will provide you with a breakdown of the hours. Once I know that you are happy with the work, I will send you an invoice, for payment within one month.
Prices
- Charwell Proof Plus charges students and academics a discounted rate of £26 per hour ($30).
- For businesses and non-academic work, fees are £30 per hour but may be negotiable for a longer job. Please contact me for a quote.
- Recent full-length books at 80,000 to 95,000 words have come in at around £600 to £700 for a proofread; a little higher for a copy-edit. To convert an edited document into an e-book typically costs around £100.

My usual proofreading speed for fiction is around 15 pages per hour. Copy-editing academic work can take much longer, depending on the complexity and standard of the writing. After you have accepted my estimate or quote, we will have a contract and work will commence. Payment will be required only after you are completely satisfied, unless the project is for a book in which case instalments may be appropriate. Once I know that you are happy with my work I will send you an invoice, for payment within one month. Payment can be made via the following methods: Direct bank transfer (account details will be forwarded upon request), Paypal (you do not need to open a Paypal account), or by cash in person. If you don’t have a UK bank account I can accept payment by Western Union, or similar.
